Medical disclaimer

Please read this before you act on any figure produced by this tool.

In one sentence. This calculator performs a mathematical conversion and shows where a value falls on a general screening scale. It does not diagnose anything, and it must never be used to begin, stop or change any medication or treatment.

Educational purpose only

Everything on this website, including the calculator, the charts, the reference tables and the written guides, exists for general information. Using it creates no clinical relationship of any kind. It is not a substitute for examination, testing, diagnosis or advice from a professional qualified to provide them.

Estimates rather than measurements

The conversion between A1C and estimated average glucose uses a relationship established by published research across a large group of participants. It describes an average pattern. Individual biology varies, so the figure this tool reports may sit above or below what a direct measurement would show for you.

The word estimated is not a formality. It marks a genuine limit on what the output can claim.

Reference categories are not diagnoses

Where the tool describes a result as below the prediabetes threshold, inside the prediabetes range, or at the diabetes threshold, it is placing a number on a general adult screening scale. Those boundaries are population signposts. Applying them to a specific person requires clinical judgement that accounts for age, history, medication, pregnancy status and much more. Confirmation testing is normally required before any conclusion is drawn.

Results can be affected by other factors

Several ordinary situations can move an A1C away from what daily glucose levels would suggest. They include the following.

  • Anemia in its various forms.
  • Pregnancy.
  • Recent blood loss, blood donation or transfusion.
  • Kidney or liver conditions.
  • Inherited hemoglobin variants.
  • Differences in how long red blood cells survive.
  • Certain medications and medical conditions.

Our guide on factors that shift a result explains the mechanism behind each of these.

The personal target field

The optional target input exists to hold a figure you have already agreed with your care team, so it can be drawn on your chart and included in your report. This site never proposes a target, because a suitable target differs between individuals and choosing one is a clinical decision.

Never delay care

Do not postpone seeking professional advice, and do not disregard advice you have already received, because of anything you read here or any figure this tool produced. If you feel unwell, or if a result concerns you, contact a qualified professional. In an emergency, contact your local emergency service immediately.

No warranty

We work to keep the formula, the reference ranges and the surrounding wording aligned with current published guidance. Even so, the site is provided as it stands, with no warranty that every figure or statement is complete, current or free of error. Reliance on the content is at your own discretion, and the limits described in our terms of use apply.

Independence

This is an independent tool. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by any laboratory, medical association, manufacturer or health service. Nothing here is promotional and no product is being sold.

Questions

Questions about how the calculator works are welcome through the contact page. Questions about your own results belong with the professional who ordered your test.
